Create Adventure Every Day in must-have pieces to mix, match and style your own way for whatever, whenever. We hate being told what to wear and when the girlfriend/wife starts trying to buy clothes, where do you draw the line? I think that by now you have earned the right to dress yourself, thank you very much!
Having said all that, no man about town wants to pitch at an event looking a right style nightmare. The last thing you need when you’re out trying to have a good time is being accosted by the ‘style police’ and feeling a right chop. So here are a few tips on what not to do when you’re mixing and matching your favourite clothes for your favourite event.
COLOUR COORDINATION & UNIFORMITY
Colour coordination should never be overlooked by the man building a wardrobe. The number one rule is to pay attention to colours and patterns. The ‘smarties box’ look is not flattering, no matter what label you’re wearing. If your shirt is busy with lots of patterns and splashes of colour, stick to your neutrals when you choose your pants, for example black, white, grey, navy and brown. Naturally, the reverse is applicable. Busy pants – plain shirt. This is an important rule chaps, so remember it.
Another handy style tip when you’re putting together your look, is to keep uniformity. By that I mean don’t rock up at a party wearing suit pants and a T-Shirt! That look only worked for Don Johnson in the 80’s. If you are dressing up then do it all the way and if you’re dressing down, keep with the theme or the ladies will avoid you like the plague.
Time to talk shoes. Summer is shorts season and a man wearing the wrong shoes with his shorts will stick out like a sore thumb. A real passion killer this one, so pay attention! Smart tailored shorts should be paired with smart loafers and sandals. Please remember that you should never wear socks here – I can barely stress this enough (unless you’re an undercover tourist). Wear secret socks if you must but that’s it. The sport inspired shorts, is more forgiving. Feel free to wear flip-flops or trainers but keep away from the old moccasin-type shoe. Funk up the old favourite, the denim shorts, with a funky hi top and rock the look if you’re feeling particularly daring.
Lastly, we take a quick look at accessories. Yes, real men do accessorise. Strap bag or Drive Tote, yay or nay on the hat and bracelets? The key is to choose wisely. You should match the accessory to the outfit or you’re going to look like a gypsy on a bad day. Don’t over accessorise – keep it elegant and understated. Nothing should overpower your clothes. Each accessory should complement the entire look. Use your mirror before you leave home – you’ll thank me later.
